There is very little music I don't love, but my main channel of musical expression is classical. As much as I enjoy playing the piano music of the great composers, I prefer experimenting with my own sounds.
The stunning beauty of Vancouver Island has inspired me to compose piano pieces in the "contemporary classical" style. Music critics say the music reminds them somewhat of Debussy, Rachmaninoff and Stravinsky, but that the style is original and definitely my own. When I studied music theory at UBC in the 1970's, I thought I would never be able to compose and be taken seriously by any critics. A modern "serious" composer was expected to write very complex, atonal music that might appeal to people like mathematicians. One day I decided not to worry about critics and began to express the "song within".
I try to uplift my listeners, to infuse them with the same passionate joy I feel in the presence of nature. Classical music does not have to be esoteric. I believe that it can appeal to just about anyone who gives it a chance and listens with an open mind.

My first CD, Vancouver Island Rhapsody (1999), was recorded on the Steinway at the University of Victoria Music School. My second CD, Crissa Constantine, Composer-Pianist (2003), was recorded on a Yamaha concert grand in Port Alberni, BC. Both CDs havve been featured on CBC Radio, some European radio stations, and on The New VI television station in Nanaimo, BC. I look forward to giving more solo concerts of my own compositions.
